Synopsis

Once again thrown into the world of the supernatural, Captain Jack Sparrow finds out that he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. And as if this weren't enough, the Captain's problems manage to wreck the wedding plans of a certain Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who are forced to join Jack on yet another misadventure.

The Title

The most famous reference to Dead Man's Chest is Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' song. In the novel he writes:

"Suddenly he -- the captain, that is -- began to pipe up his eternal song: "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest-- Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest-- Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!" At first I had supposed "the dead man's chest" to be that identical big box of his upstairs in the front room, and the thought had been mingled in my nightmares with that of the one-legged seafaring man."

A book used by Stevenson for his research mentions a Caribbean island called Dead Man's Chest, with the story that pirate Edward Teach (better known as Blackbeard) marooned fifteen of his men there after an attempted mutiny with no weapons or equipment, just one bottle of rum. The island was reputedly a rendezvous point for pirates to tell tall tales and swap their ill-gotten gains. An island in the British Virgin Islands chain is now called Dead Chest Island and claims to be the island from the stories.
