The Oscars

On January 31st 2006, 20-year old Keira Knightley received her first Academy Award nomination for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in Working Title's adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Pride & Prejudice.

~
She became the third youngest  nominee for the 'Best Actress in a Leading Role' Academy Award, and it followed numerous other nominations for the role by other organisations, including a Golden Globe, and Keira received universal acclaim for her performance by most movie critics.
~
As one of Hollywood's new style icons, many fashion houses offered their designs to Keira, but the Vera Wang dress now up for auction immediately caught Keira's eye. It also became one of the fashion highlights of Oscars night 2006.
The Dress

"She won our hearts - and a best-actress nomination - as spunky Elizabeth in "Pride and Prejudice." And on Oscar night, Keira Knightley won our vote as best-dressed star on the red carpet. She was gorgeous in a one-shoulder Vera Wang gown of wine-colored taffeta with a fitted, asymmetrical bodice and trumpet skirt."
- Jean Patteson, Orlando Sentinel

~
"Keira Knightley takes top honors for the best look. A perfect dress... Her eggplant-colored trumpet- shaped gown by Vera Wang was made of taffeta and featured a deconstructed one-shoulder strap. It was mermaid structured with a full fishtail bottom and not drippy like so many other gowns."
- Michael Quintanilla, San Antonio Express
~
The dress can currently be seen at the Vera Wang flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York City.
The Auction

"This is such an amazing dress and I am really pleased to be able to donate it to Oxfam. I have seen the TV reports on the horrendous drought in East Africa and I know how desperate things have become, so I am happy to be able to do something to help."
- Keira Knightley

~
"Keira represents the essence of youth, intelligence and beauty. She is a young woman with a conscience."
- Vera Wang
~
"Millions of people across Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Tanzania are at risk of starvation in one of the harshest droughts the region has ever faced. Young children are most at risk and there are already reports of child deaths as a result of malnutrition. Donations like this will help fund our vital work. We hope the public will get behind this auction."
- Paul Smith-Lomas, Oxfam
